On May 20th we will celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the Church at Clarendon by laying the cornerstone of our new building. We will join together at 11 am (no 9 am service) to give thanks. We invite the entire church and our guests to share in a light reception in the Welcome Hall following the service.

We have been extremely blessed at the Church at Clarendon. God continues to form us into people who love Him, love each other, and are committed to doing His will. God, working through His people among us, sustains a beautiful range of ministries that deepen our discipleship and call our community to follow Jesus. Through our dedication to unity, love and serving God, Jesus Christ will continue to be glorified in this place.

In addition (!), our choir will be reuniting again in May to prepare for our Anniversary/Building Dedication Combine Worship Service on May 20th. Please let Nat or Adelina know if you are interested in singing with us. natalie@1bc.org

Parking: There will be free parking in the garage on Highland Street, or you can park on the street. If you park in the garage tell the attendant that you are there for the church service. You will receive a ticket to bring with you into the service. After the service you will receive a validation stamp. Return the ticket with stamp to the attendant as you leave.

Entrances: The primary entrance for the new sanctuary is off of Highland Street, which is the side of the building and is handicap accessible. This brings you into Welcome Hall where there will be refreshments. You can also enter from the front of the building up the stairs. There will be signs designating “Enter Here” to help you find your way. You will not be able to enter the building from the apartment side (“V-Point.”)

Seating: There are approximately 300 seats in the new sanctuary. So that there will be convenient seating for all, please move towards the center of the seating area and avoid leaving single seats empty.

Late arrival seating: For courtesy to those attending the service, please make every effort to arrive on time for the service. The greeters will reserve a certain number of seats conveniently close to the door for late arrivers. If you arrive after the first part of the service, you may be asked to enter at the back of the sanctuary to minimize disruption.

Worship folders: We will have an exciting new system for the new building. When you enter the sanctuary you will receive a folder that will have everything you need for the service: Bulletin, worship notes, announcements, etc. Please return this on the way out of the sanctuary.

No food or drink: In honor of the new worship space we ask for you to refrain from taking food or beverages into the sanctuary.

It’s quite a daunting task to sum up an entire community of diverse individuals in a single page. How do we do justice to all the many aspects that make up the identity of a church? Instead of posting a vague statement trying to encompass everyone, we’ve asked some members of our community to give their two cents. We’d also love to hear from anyone who has participated with us. On this page, leave a comment below describing how you have experienced the Church at Clarendon. The collage of comments will do a much better job of painting the picture of our church than any one leader could do.

If you’re interested in our beliefs click here . Our vision and purpose statements are in the boxes on the the right. But if you’re trying to get a more nuanced picture of the essence of our community, check out some of the comments below.

So… Who are we?

Looking for ways to get connected and engage with our community? Here are some great places to start:

1. Join a small group. Our small groups run on a trimester schedule, meeting for about three months and then taking a breather for a month. During the month off, keep your eye out for special one-time community gatherings! Our new cycle of small groups is scheduled to start up in mid-June.

2. Serve in a ministry. One of the easiest ways to get more connected with our community is to choose a way to serve alongside others. Below are some of the ongoing needs, but if you have a passion for something new, don’t be afraid to bring it up!

Kids Ministry – help out with the DC Kids throughout the week or serve in the Sunday School at 10AM or Children’s Church at 11AM

Greeting Ministry – offer a handshake and a warm welcome to our Sunday morning guests

Hospitality Ministry – provide snacks for the fellowship hour between the services or help with set up and/or clean up on a monthly basis

3 Strands Dinners for the homeless

3. Enjoy Breakfast or Coffee with one of our staff members. Just email David (david@1bc.org) or Betsy (betsy@1bc.org) and let them know you’d like to get together, and they’ll happily buy you breakfast or coffee.

As part of our commitment to the values of love and mission, we are always seeking opportunities to serve others in meaningful ways. We have ongoing relationships with two ministries in particular:

……

DC Kids: We are blessed to have a big crowd of kids from DC come to our church for Sunday morning programs, and we are always looking for more volunteers to love these beautiful kids! In addition to helping out with Sunday School or Kid’s Moments in the service, there are lots of ways to get involved wherever you are interested / available during the rest of the week – tutoring, mentoring, building friendships, community service, summer camp, driving, special events. Interested in innercity missions or helping with youth? This is a mutually rewarding opportunity to see what a difference you can make in the lives of a part of our community! Contact Melanie Spradling (melaniejs@aol.com) / Russ Sullivan (russ.sullivan@gmail.com) to get involved.

…..

3 Strands Community Church Homeless Dinners: Each month we participate in a service project with the 3 Strands Church in Foggy Bottom, in DC. We bring a big meal (3 entrees, 3 side dishes, salad, drinks, and dessert) for 40/50 people including us, the Church members, and the homeless to their Church in Foggy Bottom. We arrive at 4:45, attend their church service, set up the dinner, eat and fellowship, then clean up the dinner. Contact Laura Berry (laura.e.berry@gmail.com) to help out by making food or helping to serve.

In addition to our ongoing projects, we are always looking for opportunities to try out new projects! Ideally these projects are suggested to us from within the church by someone who has a passion for the project. Past projects have included:

•	Serving meals at The Carpenter’s Shelter

•	Serving meals at Martha’s Table

•	Sorting food at AFAC

•	Hosting the annual Christmas Party for the DC Kids Ministry

•	“Extreme Makeover” Project for Garfield Terrace Community Center

•	Assembling care packages at the USO for US soldiers

…..
