Church History 1909 – 2019

In 1909, Clarendon was not even a village. The total population of the county was only 10,000 when the First Baptist Church of Clarendon was constituted. Twenty-three members organized our church in 1909 as the First Baptist Church of Clarendon. The first church building was completed in 1915, and an education building was added in 1936. After the growth of the war and post-war years, the congregation moved into a new sanctuary in 1950; then acquired the present parsonage in the 1950s and built a new education building in the 1960s.

In the 2000s, the church building underwent a radical transformation. The aging sanctuary, dating back to 1950, was torn down. The church was rebuilt and completed in 2012 as a multi-use building with eight stories of apartments on top of the church sanctuary, a welcome hall, offices, and classrooms. As part of The Church at Clarendon’s commitment to community, 60 percent of the units are designated as affordable housing for lower-income tenants. The apartments are owned and operated by a separate non-profit housing corporation that has a working relationship with the church, but the church does not earn any revenue from the apartments. The church steeple remains in place, a beacon that shows the building is a place of worship.

Our church has many denominational and community connections; including part of the NorthStar church network, the Baptist General Association of Virginia and close relations with the Baptist World Alliance, whose headquarters are nearby. The John Leland Center for Theological Studies is located on church grounds, as is the First Baptist Church of Clarendon Child Development Center, the largest child care center in Arlington County. The deacons maintain a benevolence fund to help members of the congregation in need and contribute monthly to various community groups.

The Church at Clarendon strives to fulfill the mission of Inviting people to discover a life of purpose and passion through Christ. As we face the future, with our 110-year history of service, we see a world of mission opportunities with a vibrant, diverse community at our doorstep. We hope to meet the tangible needs of our community, strengthen existing relationships, and remain a strong testament of Christ for many years to come.
